Aristotle Beyond the Academy

Monumental Aristotle

Encounter
Admire the funeral monument featuring Aristotle for Dr Joseph Warton in Winchester Cathedral, and the original design, both by John Flaxman. Warton (1722-1800) was headmaster of Winchester College between 1766 and 1793, but is more famous as a poet and literary critic who was much influenced by Aristotle's Poetics and Pope’s translations of Homer. John Flaxman (1755–1826) originally planned to make an embedded second sculpture, a portrait of Aristotle, central to the design, between Warton and his pupils. Sophocles' tragic heroines Electra and Antigone were to be portrayed overhead. But, apparently after discussion, Aristotle was relegated to the upper plinth alongside Homer, their names inscribed in Greek.
