Aristotle Beyond the Academy

Puppy Training with Aristotle

Encounter
Learn how to train a puppy from the beautiful illustration of ‘Aristotle teaches Alexander the Great’ in a famous German-language manuscript in Vienna, created about 1475 (Vienna cod. 3085). The manuscript belongs to the genre of Biblia Pauperum, educational texts suitable for children and the peasant illiterate, usually illustrating biblical stories. This one contains a miscellany of anecdotes and information, presented from a homely perspective, with a famous depiction of the activities suited to the month December, including roasting a hog. The illustrator enjoyed drawing and colouring in domestic scenes incorporating animals.
