Aristotle Beyond the Academy

Aristotle in the White House

Encounter
For eight years, Terry Szuplat collaborated with President Barack Obama on some of the most memorable speeches of our time. Drawing on his time as a speechwriter in the West Wing, Terry Szuplat’s book Say It Well promises to help all citizens:

• Communicate clearly and confidently in any situation
• Create an emotional connection with the audience
• Adopt a new mindset to help overcome anxieties
• Use the power of storytelling to win over listeners

In doing so, he draws on Aristotle’s Rhetoric. He explains the importance of a speaker’s logos, pathos and ethos and returns to this framework throughout the book.

It offers a compendium of speeches (not all political) with accompanying analysis. William S. Cohen, Former Republican U.S. Senator from Maine and Former U.S. Secretary of Defense believes that ‘Say It Well is a profoundly experiential book that will help you find your cadence and help our country reclaim the civility we need today.’ Let’s hope so.
