Aristotle in the UK Supreme Court 2025

Classicist barrister Sebastian Kokelaar mentioned Aristotle in the UK Supreme Court in March 2025 when he was speaking on behalf of the respondent in Stevens v Hotel Portfolio II UK Ltd. The case raised some fairly fundamental questions about equitable compensation and constructive trusts. There was lots of lively debate with (and among) the Justices. Sebastian’s opponents in their written case referred to the “telos” of the fraudulent scheme in which his client was found to have been involved. Sebastian observed in his oral submissions that this was a very Aristotelian way of putting it. The mention of Aristotle earned a chuckle from the bench!
